Skincare Advice

Let's talk healthy skin, and how to achieve that that smooth, comfortable feeling. There are three important components of healthy skin:

  1. Hydrated moisture barrier
  2. Even tone & texture
  3. Comfort

Throughout the day, your skin interacts with the environment around you, which can cause it to lose skin-essential elements such as moisture and nutrients. This can compromise the health of your skin, resulting in dry, rough, uncomfortable skin.

Now let's talk about these three essential components, how they work, and how to keep them in check, keeping your skin healthy. Next >>

Hydrated Moisture Barrier

To understand your skin's moisture barrier, let's take a closer look at how your skin works. The outermost layer of your skin is called the Stratum Corneum and is made of millions of cells held together by lipids. This structure of cells and lipids forms your skin's moisture barrier. This layer needs to contain about 10% water to function properly, and to maintain the optimal level of moisture, your body forms a group of compounds called Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMFs). These NMFs attract and form a strong bond with water to hold it within your skin. While the moisture barrier is critical to your skin's health, it can be easily impacted by environmental factors such as extended exposure to the elements, weather, and even your daily soap or cleanser. All of these can strip your skin of both its lipids and NMFs, hurting your skin's ability to retain moisture and protect itself from dryness. Next >>

Even Tone & Texture

Healthy skin has a smooth, radiant look and is soft to the touch. A key part of what contributes to this healthy look and feel is your skin's natural ability to renew itself. In this renewal process, younger cells come to the surface, while dull, dry surface cells are shed. Well-moisturized skin keeps this renewal process balanced, helping to give it an even tone and texture. When your skin lacks the necessary levels of moisture, this process begins to break down, resulting in the build-up of dry cells on the skin's surface that ultimately gives your skin a dull appearance and a rough feel. Comfort

Skin that is dry can lead to discomfort - it can be tight, rough, and even itchy. And, having itchy skin can be extremely bothersome. The sensation of itch involves the skin, cellular chemicals and the nervous system. The skin has special nerve cells responsible for sending itch and pain signals to our brain. When skin becomes dry, it is more susceptible to irritants in the environment. As a response to these irritants, skin releases certain chemicals that attach themselves to the free endings of nerve cells, prompting them to send an itch signal to the brain. The brain then tells us that a certain area itches, which causes us to scratch the area in an attempt to relieve the itch. That's why it's important to have a lotion that contains ingredients to help relieve the discomfort of extra-dry skin. Next >>
